Rs 91,975 cr invested in Odisha – Economic Survey

As many as 213 large industries are operating in Odisha with a total investment of Rs 91974.90 crore. These industries have created employment for 109891 persons, says the Economic Survey report for 2014-15.

Similarly, there are 39 medium enterprises in the state with an investment of Rs 812.04 crore that have generated employment for 8438 people. The large and medium industries are operating in 22 districts of the state.

Of the total of 252 large and medium industries, 162 units belong to engineering and metal based industries with an investment of Rs 78200.27 crore. There are 31 units of glass and ceramic industries, 18 chemical & allied industries, 15 food & allied industries and 26 other units.

Over the last 10 years, maximum investment of Rs 80506.17 crore has been grounded in the steel sector, achieving a production capacity of 12.66 million tonne per annum (mtpa), 11.45 mtpa of sponge iron and 4.23 mtpa of other products. The steel units gone into operation have provided direct employment to 27690 persons and indirect jobs to 60,390 others.

The state government has signed 48 MoUs (memorandum of understanding) in the steel sector, envisaging a total production of 83.66 million tonne out of which 30 projects have started partial production.

The survey report says Odisha had about 10 per cent of the total steel production while it has 25 per cent of the total iron ore reserves of the country. Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is the oldest steel plant in the state and the present capacity is 4.5 mtpa which is likely to get further expanded.Apart from steel, MoUs have been signed across sectors like aluminium, power, cement, auto ancillary and downstream industries.

As per advanced estimates for 2014-15, the share of the broad industry sector to GSDP of the state is 33.44 per cent as against 33.08 per cent for 2013-14.

During 2014-15, the share of the manufacturing sub-sector is 12.57 per cent and that of the mining and quarrying sub sector stands at 6.31 per cent of the GSDP. – (Source: BS)

Railway wagon factory in Odisha delayed

Four years after the Centre announced setting up of a Railway wagon factory at Sitalapalli in Odisha’s Ganjam district, the groundwork is yet to begin.

Even though Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urged the Railway Ministry to expedite the work several times, there has been no progress. The project was to be implemented on public private partnership mode and the ministry had sought 100 acre from the state.

The district administration has earmarked 101 acre in the area. The selection of the site for the project has already been conveyed to the ministry.

Establishment of the wagon factory assumes significance as Tata Steel is setting up an industrial park near the project site, while all-weather Gopalpur Port is under construction nearby.

Odisha hopes Posco project will be back on track

The much delayed POSCO project in Odisha is likely to see the light of the day, after the Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik hoped that the Prime Minister’s assurance would put the project on track.

Prime Minister Modi had assured South Korean President Park Geun-hye at Myanmar that the government would offer full support for the establishment of the mega steel plant proposed by Posco in Odisha.

“With regard to the Posco project, he (Modi) expressed his full support for it and said he would make efforts with the Odisha state government to resolve any outstanding issues,” said a statement issued by the Korean government website Nov 13.

Both the leaders met at the Korea-India summit, organised on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, held at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

Biju Expressway project launched in Odisha

Odisha government launched Rs 3,200 crore-Biju Expressway project, an economic corridor between Jagdalpur and Rourkela.

The project will be connecting four districts of western Odisha like Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundergarh with four KBK (Kalahandi-Balangir-Koraput) districts viz. Koraput, Nawrangpur, Kalahandi and Nuapada.

The proposed expressway project will also connect the border towns of western and south Odisha like Chandli, Boriguma, Nabarangpur, Papadahandi, Ambapani, Dharmagarh, Sinapali, Behella, Nuapada, Paikmal, Padmapur, Sohela, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, and Rourkela.

In the first phase of the project, 254km road will be converted to four-lanes and 402 kilometers to be two-lanes. In the second phase, 258km will be made four-lane. While the first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by May 2017, the second phase completion target has been fixed by the end of 2019.

The state has already started 4-laning from Rourkela to Sambalpur (160km) through PPP mode while 4-laning from Sambalpur to Sohella via Bargarh (74km) to be funded by ministry of road transport and highways. The project entailing an estimated investment of Rs 3,200 crore will be funded by both the state and the Centre.

As the expressway would pass through one of the most backward regions of the state, KBK region, it would help boost its economy. Post completion of the project the travel time from Jagdalpur to Rourkela will be reduced to six hours from the current 13 hours.

Odisha to invite bids for riverine port by April

The Odisha government intends to invite bids for the first riverine port in the state by April. The port is likely to come up at the Mahanadi river mouth near Paradeep close to the operational facilities of Essar Steel Odisha Ltd and Indian Farmers Fertilisers Cooperative Ltd (Iffco).

The riverine port is being taken up with assistance from the Planning Commission. A team of the Planning Commission is scheduled to visit the selected port site next week.

The riverine port in the state is modeled on a similar port built on the Tapti river mouth in Gujarat.

The state government had identified 14 locations for development of non-major port projects. Of these locations, a deep sea port planned at Barunei Muhan in Kendrapara district has been shelved owing to threat to mass nesting site of Olive Ridley turtles.

WAPCOS appointed consultant for Riverine Port Project

The Odisha government’s proposed riverine project in the state has got a major facelift with the appointment of a WAPCOS, the consultant for preparation of feasibility report.

The Kolkata based consultant Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) and the state government have signed an agreement for the purpose. The consultant will conduct a feasibility study for the riverine port project. The project entailing an investment of Rs 500 crore will be awarded through competitive bidding route. The project will be likely to coming up at the Mahanadi river mouth near Paradip, close to the plants of Essar Steel Odisha and Indian Farmers Fertilisers Cooperative and will be used as a common port for several industries.

Odisha sets up SSWCA to clear tourism projects

Odisha government has set up a Special Single Window Clearance Authority (SSWCA) to clear relevant tourism projects. The 13-member committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, can approve tourism projects with a maximum investment proposal of Rs 50 crore.

From now onwords, investors need not run from one office to another to get their projects cleared as the committee has members from different departments. It is also empowered to consult experts before giving approval.

NTPC to set up medical college & hospital in Odisha

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) signed an MoU with the Odisha government for setting up a medical college and hospital in Sundergarh district at an investment of Rs 350 crore.

The state government is likely to provide 20 acres of land at Sundergarh town free of cost for the purpose. The project is likely to be completed by 2016-17. The medical college will have 100 MBBS seats as per the norms prescribed by the Medical Council of India and the hospital will have 400-beddded one.

Three medical college-cum-hospitals are already in the process of being set up in the tribal-dominated districts of Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Talcher (Angul), and at Sundergarh.

NSL to shift its plant to Odisha

Hyderabad-based NSL Nagapatanam Power and Infratech Private Limited has decided to relocate its 1,320 MW thermal power project from Tamil Nadu to Odisha following public protest there.

This will be the second power project of the company in the State after merger of Mahanadi Aban Power Company Limited with NSL Power as per the July 27, 2012 order of the Madras High Court.

The company is in the process of acquiring land for the second project in Angul district. It has applied for clearances from the State Government and the proposal is being scrutinised by the Industrial Investment Promotion Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL).

Chhatrapur titanium project clears legal hurdles

The Department of law, Government of Odisha has cleared Saraf Agencies Pvt Ltd’s (SAPL) much delayed titanium project at Chhatrapur in Ganjam district of Odisha. Saraf Agencies is planning to set up the project.
